Chandler Limited Zener Limiter

The Chandler Limited Zener Limiter is a modern reissue of EMI’s classic limiter circuit, created to celebrate Abbey Road Studios’ 75th anniversary. Designed by Chandler Limited’s Wade Goeke, it blends the vintage tone of the RS168 and TG12345 with added features like selectable input impedance, stepped attack and release controls, and multiple compression modes for greater flexibility in modern recording setups.

Chandler Limited Zener Limiter

The Chandler Limited Zener Limiter is a modern evolution of the classic TG limiter, created to mark the 75th anniversary of Abbey Road Studios. Designed by Wade Goeke of Chandler Limited, it draws directly from the original EMI circuitry used on landmark recordings by The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

The Chandler Limited Zener Limiter continues EMI’s lineage of limiters that began with the RS114 valve limiter in 1954, followed by the RS168 Zener Limiter in 1968.

These designs later influenced both the TG12345 console in 1969 and the original TG12413 in 1974. This updated edition merges the character of the RS168 and TG12345 into a versatile and fully-featured limiter built for today’s studios.

Developed to offer greater control while preserving the classic TG sound, the Chandler Limited Zener Limiter introduces several enhancements.

New additions include a selectable input impedance for soft or hard signal drive, an 11-position stepped attack control, a 21-position stepped recovery control, side chain filtering, and three dynamic settings: Comp 1, Comp 2, and Limit. These features give users precision shaping over the unit’s distinctive vintage tone.

Chandler Limited Zener Limiter Reviews

The TG12413 Zener Limiter is one of those devices that you either love or love to hate. It certainly has a distinctive, colourful sound based on a wonderful vintage ancestry. Heck, you even get the EMI stamp of approval on the front. However, the Zener comes with a rather hefty price tag, and in a market heavily populated by industry favourites it’ll face stiff competition. There again, if you’re in the market for a tracking compressor/limiter that sounds extraordinary on the drums bus, or if you’re looking for some funky TG flavour to add to your arsenal of colours, or maybe you’re trying to release the next Beatlesesque hit, then give the Chandler TG12413 Zener Limiter an audition, you may just end up loving it.
…And unlike some of the artists you’ll run through it who struggle to sound as good as they look, the TG12413 sounds great. I can only imagine how happy EMI must be to have Wade Goeke designing the gear that their name goes on. I bet his birthday will soon be a company holiday, and they’ll be taking out a massive insurance policy on his ears, because he keeps nailing it, design after design.
