The Stam Audio SA-4000 MK3 is a dual-mode stereo bus compressor that faithfully recreates the iconic G and E Series Oxford console compressors using four hand-built SA-202C VCA cans. It adds modern features like a mix blend control, stereo sidechain, HPF, new ratio options, and switchable transformer mods. Built entirely by hand in Chile with premium components, it delivers classic analogue glue and punch, making it ideal for mix and drum buss duties in modern hybrid setups.
The Stam Audio SA-4000 MK3 is a meticulously crafted stereo bus compressor that authentically recreates not one, but two legendary console compressors from the iconic G and E Series Oxford Consoles. Revered for delivering musical glue and punch, these compressors have been central to countless hit records over the past three decades. The SA-4000 MK3 captures this legacy with unprecedented accuracy and adds modern enhancements to suit today’s workflows.
At its core are four hand-built SA-202C VCA cans—two in the gain reduction circuit and two in the sidechain path—based on the original DBX 202C “gold” modules used in vintage SSL desks. This design not only retains the sonic character of the original G Series but introduces a unique midrange presence and transient impact, especially on drums. With the twist of a front-panel switch, users can toggle between the G Series mode and the E Series quad VCA configuration, effectively giving access to two classic bus compressors in a single unit.
Every SA-202C is assembled and matched by hand in Chile, using the same build techniques as the original 1980s units. To complement these, Stam Audio selected Elna Silmic capacitors for their extended frequency response and superior stereo imaging, chosen after extensive testing of sixteen different brands.
In addition to its authentic circuitry, the Stam Audio SA-4000 MK3 introduces a suite of modern features: a true stereo sidechain, mix blend control, five-position high-pass filter, new 1.5:1 and 3:1 ratio options, a transformer bypass switch, and the signature G/E Series selector.
Three optional modifications allow users to further customise the unit. The British Mod adds Carnhill output transformers and BA283 cards for a classic Neve-style low-end warmth. The American Mod integrates SA-2520 opamps and Steel 2503 transformers, providing punch and energy reminiscent of classic American drum buss tones. The Fairchild Mod adds custom replica HS-52 transformers and four 6BA6 tubes, delivering rich harmonic depth and tube-driven character akin to the Fairchild 670.
All Stam Audio SA-4000 MK3 units feature true balanced outputs and are fully hand-built and calibrated in Chile, with every unit tested and burned in for 24 hours to ensure reliability and performance. There are no compromises in components, from the VCA cans to the final output stage.
For engineers mixing in the box, the Stam Audio SA-4000 MK3 offers a powerful analogue solution to combat the sterility of digital workflows. Whether on a mix bus or a drum bus, it adds cohesion, impact, and warmth without sacrificing detail. It’s one of those rare pieces that improves everything it touches, regardless of genre.
