Solid State Logic Fusion Stereo Analogue Colour

Solid State Logic Fusion introduces six completely new analogue colouration tools designed to bring the perfect combination of added tonal character, weight and space to your mix bus or stereo stems, with the detail, warmth and finesse that only real analogue circuits can provide.

The SSL sonic legacy is built upon a much-emulated collection of analogue audio processing tools that have featured in generations of studio consoles; pristine mic pre’s, classic Channel EQ & Dynamics, the legendary Stereo Bus Compressor, the Listen Mic Compressor, and the unique SSL summing bus.

Solid State Logic Fusion takes SSL into a new era with the introduction of a suite of new analogue processing tools that offer exceptional tonal character and versatility. Solid State Logic Fusion expands the processing palette for hybrid studio owners and is a superb partner for the SSL Stereo Bus Compressor.

Expertly designed for today’s hybrid studio
SSL has also always been known for clever connectivity and features that streamline and accelerate production workflow. Solid State Logic Fusion fits right in with a collection of workflow enhancing features including: +/-12dB Input and Output Trim controls, an Input overload LED, large peak-hold metering, a front-end 3rd order High Pass Filter with three selectable cut off frequencies, and tri-colour status indicators for the Vintage Drive and HF Comp/LMC sections.

A set of XLR connections can be used either as a Stereo Insert for stereo mix bus processing or switched to function as a Mid-Side (MS) circuit enabling separate compressors or EQ to be applied to the middle (centre) and sides of a stereo signal. In Stereo Insert mode the insert point can be switched to pre-Violet EQ, when in MS mode the insert can be switched to pre-Stereo Image controls. Input and Output connections are via XLR.

Solid State Logic Fusion Stereo Analogue Colour Reviews

While I love analog gear, I’m not a purist. I feel both have their place in a modern professional audio workflow. I can genuinely say Fusion does something a plugin simply can’t. The combination of weight, dimension and the tone of the circuits in Fusion add magic I haven’t been able to tease out of working in the box. I’m sure if you really tried hard enough, you could make a plugin chain that could do something similar, but why would you want to go through the trouble? Instead of tabbing between six plug-in windows, it’s all right there in one handsome, “this guy means business” box. I know the price may be a bit steep to some of our readers, but I assure you – once you bought one, you’d wonder how you ever worked without it. It will change your approach to mixing for the better and make life much easier. How do I know this? Well, I liked it so much, I bought it.
In today’s world of increasingly in-the-box work, SSL Fusion checks all the right boxes for adding analog mojo to your master bus. Easy to use and possessed with a broad throw of tonal sweetening capabilities, this is a very impressive piece.
I found the Fusion very useful as a multi‑function processor in my mastering chain. It was a delight to use it to add most welcome and attractive tonal and sonic enrichments to a wide range of mixes in wildly different styles and genres. It’s a refined tool, which seems to me to give its best when used with a light touch — it serves to enhance the good and desirable aspects of a stereo mix or stem, but usually does this in a delightfully subtle, transparent way, while simultaneously gently suppressing the bad and undesirable. That’s not to say it can’t add crunch and grit, exaggerated smiley response curves, and excessive stereo image widths if that’s desired — it most certainly can do that, especially when working on individual sources rather than final mixes. And with that in mind, it’s probably most versatile when integrated into a DAW system, where it is relatively easy to deploy on individual tracks, stereo stems, or final mixes, as required. In short, then, the Fusion represents an interesting new direction for SSL, and it’s one they’ve embarked upon with confidence and accomplishment. It’s a very well‑built and expertly developed ‘colouring’ tool that exudes quality and class, both physically and sonically.
