The SPL P8 is a professional-grade eight-channel microphone preamplifier, meticulously engineered for high-quality multi-channel recording applications. Each of its eight preamplifiers is constructed with a discrete design, utilising individual transistors rather than integrated circuits, a hallmark of premium preamplifier engineering that ensures superior sound fidelity.
Users can precisely control the preamplification with an analogue gain knob, offering a range from +8 dB to +62 dB, accommodating even the most demanding microphones.
Each channel is equipped with individually switchable 48V phantom power for condenser microphones, a 20 dB PAD switch to manage high-level signals such as those from loud percussion or brass instruments, a phase inversion function to correct signal polarity, and a switchable analogue high-pass filter that attenuates frequencies below 80 Hz to eliminate subsonic noise.
The P8 features Neutrik XLR microphone inputs with gold-plated contacts, ensuring reliable and balanced signal transmission at a nominal level of 0 dBu. For outputs, it provides two DB25 connectors that deliver analogue line-level signals from all eight preamps, facilitating seamless integration with multi-channel AD converters and parallel recording setups without the need for external splitters.
For those requiring digital connectivity, the SPL P8 offers an optional eight-channel AD converter with ADAT outputs. This converter employs the esteemed AKM AK5538 ADC chip, capable of handling sampling rates up to 192 kHz, thus preserving the pristine quality of the analogue signal in the digital domain.
The AD converter includes two optical ADAT outputs (TOSLINK), ensuring compatibility with a wide array of audio interfaces. Additionally, it features word clock input and output connections with a termination switch, allowing for precise synchronisation within complex digital studio environments.
The SPL P8’s robust construction includes a 4 mm thick black anodised aluminium front panel and solid aluminium knobs, complemented by a high-quality steel chassis with an elegant black powder-coated finish. This design not only ensures durability but also adds a professional aesthetic to any studio setup.
Handcrafted in SPL’s own production facility in Niederkrüchten, Germany, the SPL P8 exemplifies the brand’s commitment to quality and precision in audio engineering.
